the future of full immersion into virtual reality/worlds will have to include a way to explore digital spaces by walking, running and jumping.

in other words: using more than your vision!

even adolescent males, securely confined into their mom’s basement – gaming the day away – intuitively know that moving around a bit more is not a bad idea.

enter cyberith, a small start-up out of austria: they are ready to provide gamers with a device that might just make you sweat like arnold while shooting aliens: behold the virtualizer…

I’ll just mention that camera based tracking is always better when you use more than 1 camera. 1 reason for this is that your body will block the tracking of your arms or legs, making the tracking lose your limbs. With 2 Kinect cameras, set 90 degrees from each other, you get a full 360 view of your avatar, and will almost never lose the tracking of your limbs.

I like the idea of multi directional treadmill, but I’m just not sure how commercially viable it is. When it comes to VR, movement is really the issue, and it seems like the treadmill will address that. I’m not sure that we could not do something similar with just cameras tho. Of course, you would not actually walk. I can imagine a system using the kinect where you simply take a step forward to walk, and you just stand in that position, closer to the main camera, to keep walking. When you want to stop walking, you just step back into the sweet zone. To strife, you step to the side, and then back to the center to stop.

    Just some thoughts.
