  2. I’m tired of demos and videos of how tech companies ‘think’ we will be using their tech in a couple years time.

    1. Ciaran Laval says:

This has been going on for years, do you remember Tomorrow;s World?

      1. draxfiles says:

        Ciaran have linkage?

  3. Zu: “– jo is busy reading and making”:

… ah, der Simplicissimus! Ob man die abgebildeten Hefte auch tatsächlich durchblättern und lesen kann? In der Freien Bibliothek Pegasus- Freie Bücher für SL. Unkommerzielle deutschsprachige Bibliothek – kann man es! Zumindest die ersten drei Ausgaben in einem Buch zusammen gefasst gibt es dort. Natürlich free und full perm. Und bei Bedarf kann ich auch spätere Ausgaben erstellen.

  4. Becky says:

Fun show today guys – lots of juicy stuff to make the mind race with anticipation 🙂

  5. Inara Pey says:

Magic Leap – a few points.

    1. People have seen demos of the capabilities such as John Markoff from the New York times (see: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/15/science/taking-real-life-sickness-out-of-virtual-reality.html?_r=0).

    2. Tech information has been examined by the likes of Tom Simonite of MIT Technology review (see: http://www.technologyreview.com/news/532001/how-magic-leaps-augmented-reality-works/) and Sean Hollister at Gizmodo (see: http://gizmodo.com/how-magic-leap-is-secretly-creating-a-new-alternate-rea-1660441103), both of whom I summarised (see: https://modemworld.wordpress.com/2014/11/24/magic-leap-bringing-augmented-reality-to-film-in-2015/)

    3. Don’t forget they’ve also filed a patent for a virtual worlds Trademark as well, and have indicated they’ll be looking into VR as well as AR.

On ergonomics, Jo may not care on that front vis VR, but a lot of others do – up to and including Brendan Iribe, John Cormack and others from Oculus VR, because they’re aware that many people out in the world are wary of “looking stupid” wearing an HMD.

Just like a photo or video that makes SL look good is more likely to convince someone to try it out, so to is a good-looking headset more likely to help generate wider sales than a “brick on a harness”. (Plus there is the no small matter of form factor convenience: small, good looking and portable HMDs will likely be further attractive to wider audiences than ugly and awkward-looking units.)

    1. draxfiles says:

thx Inara for your comment. We have been discussing the MIT review and their aspirations in the VW space [via patents] in previous shows. Competition is heating up for SL, HiFi and uuuhmmmm wait…is Twinity still around?????

      1. Inara Pey says:

Yup… but just like to remind people, given the preponderance of references to the Daily Mail (for which, as someone from the UK, I sincerely apologise to the rest of the world for having foisted upon you) that there are actually verifiable sources out there …
