lauren beukes was our guest today to discuss her latest novel “afterland” [careful: it has a pandemic in it and almost all men are dead from that fictional virus!]

lauren is no stranger to virtual worlds [she arguably merged the cuteness of animal crossing with the ruthless narcissism of some visitors to a second life welcome area in her 2008 debut “moxyland”, see quote below …]

so turns out fluffoki lives … apparently …

… and so the sl book club team went all out with a special set to accomodate all creatires, special moxy dolls and custom avatars galore included.
enjoy the discussion:
and now onward for more linkage:
- the original live stream
- the post show hangout
- some postgame imagery, featuring set/dolls built by ruby and avatars made by skinstealer [more on our flickr page]
- some of the slides co-producer shyla prepared and we could not discuss much = lauren’s preferred charities book dash and rape crises
- lauren weaves south-african social issues into her work and drax is reading a lot on ronnie kasrils and other jewish communists who fought apartheid starting in the 60s [some to this day!]

- great talk with lauren about the lingering legacy of apartheid in her country, the flawed truth & reconciliation process and how this history relates to storytelling/ can be harnessed for telling important stories …
- lauren has been talking about corporate apartheid for years … it is real!

- what is new in second life? incredible outpouring in light of ebbe’s passing and a tribute to him with some new music by yours truly … this music just flowed, i don’t know from where. rip ebbe!
