roseanne a. brown‘s debut novel “a song of wraith and ruin” is a wonderfully rich fantasy novel, a celebration of storytelling as means to preserve cultural memory. written for young folks, but thoroughly enjoyed by at least one adult [me!], it combines bits of west-african folklore tradition with a nod to sprawling epics like “lord of the rings”.

current issues of political and societal importance are interwoven without effort. enjoy a great conversation with a super fabulous talent:
… and now onward to discussing more via assorted links below:
- the original live-streamed show:
- impressions from the world created by ruby for our show [join our flickr for more!]:
- we touch on staples of african folklore, like the trickster hyena which plays a part in roseanne’s book but also the ubiquitous spider person anansi [which does not but alas we need to mention it/him] …
- and because we can in second life: shyla aka krijon dressed up as a hyena to get us started with the book by reading the first page of chapter 1 …

- roseanne in her own words!
- want to read more contemporary african spec fic? this is the account to follow!
- just because we can and we love it: another video that came up on youtube as i was searching for hyena …[who has, together with the ostrich, vastly different roles in different european, asian and african countries‘ tradition]
- more african writing on the second life book club? heck yes = mark 8/18 for a big one!

- what else is new in second life? a lot but also: i will be slow to respond because the next feature film is in the works and it is massive and it even involves animal crossing oh man ….. wish us luck!
