show #298: talking the tainted with cauvery madhavan

show #298

cauvery madhavan‘s book “the tainted” is a story of tragic love set against the struggle for independence in ireland as well as india in the early 20th century. it skips a bunch of decades and a generation or two and resumes in the 1980s to conclude in the most heart-wrenching way drax could envision.

and reportedly cauvery did not know how the end was going to happen 3/4ths through writing the book!

enjoy a wide-ranging conversation about craft, culture and an epic narrative with loads of historical context thrown in for good measure! i am off, catching up with cauvery’s back catalogue

and here we go with the aforementioned additional material/context:

  • the original live-streamed show:
  • postgame hangout:
  • shyla prepared wonderful slides on the various themes “the tainted” is touching on [feel free to get into interweb rabbit holes to investigate further or even better = get some good books on those topics!]:
  • good added context about the irish side of the 1920s = our show with patricia murphy from a few months back:
  • next week = a change of pace: almost no real facts in simon stephenson‘s “set my heart to five” because it is about a robot writing a successful hollywood screenplay. oh wait …. is this an autobiography of every screenwriter who dabbled in formula to make a buck? tune in and find out!
  • what else is happening in second life? the first 4k video i ever produced is coming, that’s what! you may recognize the location …. but gotta sub to the official sl youtube channel folks!
the far … something?
