SL is and always will be the best.
Why did LInden Lab not understand that. They are reinventing the wheel and it will add nothing as we are rolling along just fine.
My anxiety would be, Sansar, will drag SL down as it struggles to gain a foothold. How can they expect to fund it from Creators? Creators build, customers buy.
SL creators are unique. I don’t think it will be the same in Sansar. They need to build what will sale.
Not the best for innovation and experimentation. The hallmark of SL from the very beginning.

Chicken, thank you for your comment! Question: how would you propose LL deal with the advances in input tech like new VR HMDs that are not compatible with SL? Should they not try to incorporate those into a new world going forward and at the same time keeping SL vibrant and up to date as much as they can? Just want to know your opinion 🙂

everyday use of a headset and arm waving controls are for the minority. It will be many years before every home has them. Then most will use them much like the WII, tennis with granddad. Can you really see a typical SL users dressed in gadgets, waving there arms around to place a coffee table and floor lamp. Just to socialize with friends? Let others try and make a world, Facebook, Google and the like. It will be good for SL. We will be here when they get bored with what they cannot do. SL is more than just new tech. Over the years we have created so much with so little. Now we have improvements and I am sure SL will continue so shine bright. With or without advanced lighting. I have a table with the D-LAB Piu Piccoli figures. When I look at them I am amazed and astonished, true creative magic. Not bad for so called old tech:)

I think the salient point is what was pointed out towards the end: Sansar is not SL; it’s not SL 2.0, and setting expectations based on what SL is will end in tears.

It’s a new beast with different capabilities and with a different target demographic. It’s also not done, so we don’t know it will evolve into, just like no one could know exactly what SL would become 14 years ago.

All of which should further reassure those who fear that SL will be shut down once Sansar gets it feet wet. My bet is Mr. Trump will not be President anymore when SL finally retires into the dark, digital void of nothingness.

    1. Good point on that Sansar is not done 🙂 and it does bear repeating: Sansar is NOT SL 2.o + LL has NOT abandoned SL at all = anyone who is in-world as much as I am or Jo will testify to that!

You don’t have to beg! I’ll comment.

Second Life suffered from 2 major issues that kept it from going mainstream. First was LL’s lack of direction and failures during it’s most important and popular time. The 2nd issue was technology changing as fast as it did, going from desktop towers to laptops to tablets. It’s pretty amazing that SL is still thriving in this technological environment.

    On to Sansar….

No mainland, not a big deal in Sansar. We mostly just TP anyways. As long as Sansar is more like just teleporting, then I’m fine with no mainland. I have a mainland store in SL, and there’s many things I wished LL would do with mainland. I proposed in the forums that LL change it’s business model with the mainland, letting the land go for whatever someone is willing to pay for it, instead of it’s $195 fee. This would change the mainland market completely, and give access to sims at a much lower price, while maintaining it’s current business model with private sims.

Building systems are going to be in Sansar, as how would anything work without them. Every 3D program on the planet has a primitive system, and I don’t see how Sansar could or should be any different. The question is really how advanced it will be. I say, be patient, and be openminded to a building system much different than SL. I’d like to see building systems that make it quicker and easier to create environments. Like, give creators a tool to randomly paint vegetation in the environment. Give us some kind of array system that allows us to quickly build….. say a long fence. Limiting tools to SL’s wacky primitive torturing system is not very exciting to me. That’s SL, and it’s what made it unique, and got the ball rolling. All of us old timers can appreciate a well made prim whatever, but it’s not the future.

What worries me about Sansar is the total and complete lack of any talk about the avatars and animation system. Making a world is the easy part. You could have the most amazing world in the world, but if your avatar and animation systems are shit, then you got nothing at all. In my honest opinion. You start with the avatar and animation system, and everything else revolves around that. You’d think LL would understand this better given all that’s gone on with Bento.

    1. Ella Wellesley says:

that’s the problem LL fail to understand there users. Avatars equal identity, what most spend a good deal on. It will be on this that creators will gain most sales from and in turn LL make there money. So why worry so much about architecture, we can all build a home to some fashion.

@erikMondrian Exactly! What is missing from this conversation is that the ‘barrier to entry’… that is, the learning curve of SL is a feature, not a bug! The 600,000 of us who were incredibly intrigued and stuck it out (climbed the steep learning curve) make use a select certain type of person, a niche. This is not to be talked about negatively. It defines us! We should be proud. We wear our merit badges of having conquered inventory and building and how to operate a sex bed and how to behave when we are all projecting our identities into our avatars. I would say this should be the starting point for understanding what SL is… not the simple comparison to games and complaining about ease of use. Think about it. Seriously, step back, if you have been in SL for years, step back and think about the community. My SL sort-of gf is a 60 yo housewife… how the heck do you tell me that it’s too hard for people when she was able to get fully into the complexities. We help each other too. Don’t dismiss Second Life. It is special and hugely misunderstood.

    oops lol oh well…..

    1. draxfiles says:

Better twice posting than never hihihi 🙂 ANYWAYS = spot on with the misunderstanding stuff. I always have that anecdote about my son’s friend who had a 6 year old brother and it took him 3 minutes to figure out how to rez and manipulate a prim to make something! So I think the interface is NOT the issue!
