back in the glorious days of ’08 the scilands archipelago of sims was home to MICA which stands for meta-institute for computational astrophysics. among many thriving exhibits run by a number of other institutions, MICA held public lectures and was focused on communicating with the enthusiastic science “amateur”.
our guest today is curious george aka caltech professor george djorgovski who was instrumental in popularizing [at least temporarily…] the concept of using virtual worlds for science outreach.
enjoy a special show, partially recorded in empty physical rooms/virtual sims & one vibrant european city:
now go on, dear listener and read:
- george’s avatar = just like him in rl!

- george was in munich because he is active in the e-science community

- “the mica experiment” a paper by the mica folks about their experience [2008-2012]

- mica talks are no more but up until 2012 it was a vibrant place….

- scilands empty? only if YOU don’t go there and check out the great stuffs:

- a public lecture organized by mica in 2009:
- draxtor checks out mars on explorer island with sandstorms in the background

- the initial red flag that triggered draxtor defensiveness [aka DD] – an article on abandoned college campuses on fusion dot net

- a vintage draxtor reportage about media in second life featuring ira flatow’s “science friday” show simulcast in sl:
- 2007 = those were the days when ira shrugged off the skeptics:

- alternatives to vw science outreach: online classes

Brand new Drax Files Radio Hour is now available:
In the retrospect, doing it in a busy bar on a busy street maybe was not the best idea.
I hear everything clear George, your voice cuts through very well! Thank you so much for putting up with the hectic circumstances 🙂
